What Rich Messages are in Telegram and why a channel wants them
The extended message format allows 32 768 characters, headings, tables and media inside the structure — with buttons. Here is when to use it and when a plain post is better.
An ordinary Telegram message holds 4096 characters, and a message with media holds a caption of 1024. For most posts that is plenty. For a digest, a guide or a release note it is not.
What the extended format changes
Rich Messages raise the limit to 32 768 characters and add structure: headings, quotes, lists, collapsible blocks, tables, formulas — and media placed inside the text rather than attached to it. Photos can be grouped into a collage or a slideshow right between two paragraphs.
Crucially, the format keeps inline buttons. A photo album does not: the API accepts the keyboard and silently drops it, so readers see an album with no call to action.
When to reach for it
- The text does not fit a caption but belongs with the picture.
- You need buttons next to several images.
- The post has a real structure: sections, a table of parameters, a collapsible «details» block.
When a plain post is better
Short announcements. A single photo with two lines of text. Anything a reader takes in without scrolling. Structure that is not needed reads as noise, and a wall of headings over three sentences looks corporate in the bad sense.
The practical rule
Write the post first, then let the length decide. A good scheduler does this for you: while the text fits the caption it goes out as an ordinary message, and the moment it does not — or the moment you add buttons to an album — it switches to the extended format instead of refusing to publish.
That way you never think about limits until they matter, and you never lose buttons without being told.
